Has anyone ever said to you, "What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?” Or “What would you do differently if you knew you couldn't fail?”
what-would-you-do-if-you-couldnt-fail
Somebody asked me that question 25 years ago, and I remember thinking at the time, "What a bullshit question. Of course, I can fail." Of all the things that could happen when I'm doing something new or different, I could fail. At that time, I totally dismissed it and never really thought about it. I didn't think about the alternatives or nuances of that question.
25 years later, I am now coaching people in business, and there are things that I know and guarantee will absolutely work in business.
However, what I see in people that I coach is that rather than trusting the process that they can't fail with this thing, they come up with lots of reasons to screw it up, lots of doubts, and so on. As for me, I absolutely know and understand what they're going through because I was in that same place and felt the same way when I had somebody coaching me.
The most important thing I want to get across to my clients and to those who are overcoming something in their lives is that there are specific actions that will lead to a certain outcome. If you believe to take on this road, you've got to make sure that the roads are aiming in the right direction .
For example, I'm working with a client at the moment who’s writing a book. Once the book is written, it will position him as a thought leader in his industry which will help him stand out amongst other people. As a result, it'll allow him to attract more leads, convert more customers, and his business will take off. Now, this client of mine only needs five or six clients a year because they pay so much and he does so much work with them. If he writes a well-written book, he’ll be able to get five or six clients, or probably even up to 10 or 20 clients a year.
Now, my job is to help him ensure that the book is pointing in the right direction. Think of it like a bridge. If the bridge is pointing north to south and you also want to go north or south, then the bridge is fantastic. However, if you want to go in the east or west direction, then the north-to-south bridge is not pointing in the right direction.
The fact that he owns the bridge means he can direct it in any way. It's up to him to point it in the direction that he wants. So, this comes down to you thinking, "What if I couldn't fail? Where do I want to end up? If it's five years from now, where do I want to be standing at the other end of that bridge?"
Those questions are really important because if you do something that can't fail, like writing a book for a particular niche and industry, and you point it in the wrong direction, then you will succeed in creating a life, a business, and a group of clients that you don't want to be with. If you don't point it towards the right clients and lifestyle, then you're going to end up where you've pointed it because the thing won't fail.
For instance, one of my goals was to build a business that allows me to do whatever I want and still run my business. Now, I'm here in Outback Western Australia, and my business is working. I'm doing coaching remotely and you might say, "Well, that's just because of COVID, so everybody's working remotely."
For 22 years, I've been working from a home office that is nowhere near my clients. I’ve never even met some of them. They can be from anywhere in the world. I've been doing that for a very long time.
I pointed the bridge in the right direction so I can have a team working from wherever they are with my clients, and I just have to oversee it. With my coaching clients, I can coach them from anywhere in the world. Now here I am, on the other side of that bridge. I can go anywhere I want whether that's in Western Australia, New South Wales, or overseas because I've built the bridge in the right direction.
Here are some of the questions that you need to ask yourself:
What would you do if you couldn't fail?
Where should you point your bridge?
Who do you want to be working with?
How many do you want to work with?
What do you want to work on with them?
Do you want to be anywhere?
Where do you want to be? Would you really like to be in a CBD or capital city?
If you knew you couldn’t fail, how would you design your life in the future?
Every step you’re taking, whether it's writing a book, building a database, learning to be a great speaker, or whatever it is, each step moves you closer to where you really want to be at the end of the day.
